Condensation is the change of gas into a liquid and is the reverse of vaporisation. It is caused by many things like poor ventilation, having a shower, taking a bath, cooking food, breathing and washing & drying clothing inside your house. Condensation in houses is an unwanted phenomenon as it causes dampness, wood rot, peeling decorations, corrosion and can cause mold health issues.
It happens when the warm air comes in contact with a cold surface (outside wall), turning into water droplets on a wall or surface. Lack of ventilation and modern occupancy styles can lead to a buildup of excessive humidity and moisture. This poor indoor air quality can lead to serious health issues for asthma and allergy sufferers and those with breathing difficulties. It can make a room very unpleasant to be in because it creates a musty damp smell the really irritates the nose. Many companies in the UK will come to your home see the black mould on a wall and diagnose it as rising damp.
To get the correct diagnosis on condensation or your dampness issue make sure you instruct a specialist damp surveyor. Getting the correct diagnosis on your condensation problem can potentially save you the cost of damp proofing and unnecessary damp treatment.

Why it’s in your home:
Condensation in the home is one of the most common dampness problems in the world and occurs mostly in the cold winter months. This can cause black mould and water droplets to develop on your walls, floors, wardrobes, doors, clothing, shoes and windows. If condensation is left untreated over a long period of time it can lead to black mould developing on in your house where the moisture has condensed.
Common signs of condensation in homes and buildings
Mould growth or mildew – which typically occurs on cold external walls, in poorly ventilated areas such as behind furniture, in un-ventilated cupboards, wardrobes or corners of rooms and can appear at both floor and ceiling height.
- Musty damp smell
- Wet walls and peeling wallpaper
- Water running down windows and walls
How to get rid of it?
To stop any condensation problem in homes you will need to have your dampness issue correctly diagnosed by a specialist condensation company. On the day of the condensation survey or damp survey, the surveyor will give you expert knowledge and advice on how to get rid of the mould.
The best way to tackle the black mould is an antifungal scrub with specialist nontoxic chemical and install air vents for the moisture to escape. The cost of condensation treatment is very cheap once correctly diagnosed and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Some companies will tell you to install several air vents in the property but this can actually make the problem a lot worse.
Before tackling the damp problem we recommend you get our specialist advice before installing any air vents, air bricks or extractor fans to your home.
Secondary Measures for Stopping Condensation
- Insulate cold surfaces – cavity wall insulation.
- Remove excess moisture in the air – e.g. open window when taking a shower, keep extractor fan on when cooking and avoid indoor drying of clothes.
- Prevent possible water penetration.
- Use an anti-mould paint.
- Clean any mould growth before it starts spreading.
- Any moisture on surfaces will need to dry immediately.
How to Control Condensation
Controlling it is based on two small things, but a number of other measures will need to be taken.
Improve Ventilation: Improving ventilation will sweep away the internal moisture in the air and replace it with drier air from the outside (external air is drier than internal air).
Improve Heating: Also with ventilation, heating is important and should be set or applied to give a low level background heat. This will ensure no rapid changes to the home environment and will keep wall surfaces slightly warm over a period of time and this will reduce the risk of condensation accruing in any part of your home.
Problems:
Condensation can have a massive effect on a building and its interior if left untreated. If condensation is left long enough it can cause a lot of damage to the items and materials in contact with the moisture, leading to repairs and loss of items.
Some of the main components that come in contact with the moisture are the wood around your window, this material over time will absorb the moisture a decay from the inside and will need replacing.
Controlling
Air contains water a lot of water vapor (atmospheric moisture). Condensation forms on the coldest surfaces in a room, usually on and around the windows. The cold surfaces in your home are cooled because of the temperature outside is considerably lower to the temperature inside which is why condensation happens during the winter months. Condensation will become present in corners of an outside wall, behind furniture and in wardrobes, this is because these areas have poor air circulation.
If you have a small area in your home where some condensation is appearing don’t worry because this is not a problem. If you get a small area this isn’t a problem because it depends on what the surface it is appearing on and for how long it stays on the surface. You will only need to take action when the mould growth starts becoming bigger and covering a larger area.
Condensation will eventually disappear once the cold surface heats back up to room temperature.
Extractor fans to remove the moisture in the air reducing the risk of condensation:
Ideal for high humidity locations in your home such as the bathroom and have more than enough power for the kitchens. These units are now the first choice for housing associations when they have a condensation problem in there property’s. These extractor fans will evacuate any moisture in the air to the outside fast and efficiently prevention mould growth or moisture build-up.
